Obverse

Bare head of King George VI facing left; below the neck in small letters HP (for Thomas Humphrey Paget); around, GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX.

Reverse

Crowned lion standing left on crown, head facing, dividing the date; around above, FID DEF IND IMP (part of the monarch's legend - the other part being on the obverse; it is abbreviated from FIDEI DEFENSOR INDIAE IMPERATOR and means "Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India); around below, ONE SHILLING. Two roses before and after the denomination which were not present in the earlier "Second Lion on Crown" design.

"IND: IMP:" dropped from the legend after 1948 due to the Independence of India.

Above the lion's tail in small letters, the artist's initials KG (for George Kruger Gray). The initials were also dropped after 1948.
