Coin type: Threepence (Second Design, Debased)
Description

There were two forms of threepence, the currency issue and a special piece for the Maundy Thursday ceremonies; both had the numeral 3 on the reverse but the Maundy issues have a proof-like finish. The threepence was first issued for circulation in Britain in 1845, earlier pieces were for Colonial use only. It proved more popular than the groat (fourpence) which was discontinued in favour of the threepence in 1856.

Composition: 0.500 silver (0.0227 oz ASW).
