Coin: Twenty Cents 2001 Centenary of Federation - Australian Capital Territory
Description

In 2001, Australia released a series of coins to commemorate the Centenary of Federation. There were nine different designs for twenty cent coins which marked the occasion - one each for the six states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia), the two territories (Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory) and for Norfolk Island.

The Royal Australian Mint held a national competition for primary and secondary school students to design a coin to represent their state or territory, the coins representing the vision and talent of Australia's youth.

Student Design winner for the Australian Capital Territory was Stacy Jo-Ann Paine of Caroline Chisholm High School.

Stacy wanted her design to include as many Canberra icons and federation symbols as possible and came up with a computer generated design for her entry. It depicts the flagpole at Parliament house surrounded by a map of the Territory with inset abbreviation ACT and the denomination 20 CENTS, the Federation Star, a Royal Bluebell and a bunch of Canberra Federation Roses (a special ACT floral emblem for the Centenary of Federation Year 2001). The designer's initials SJP are in the left base of the flagpole.

The inscription around reads CELEBRATING THE AUSTRALIAN CENTENARY OF FEDERATION 1901 TO 2001.
