Description

A crown is a 5 shillings coin. Struck as part of a new coinage introduced for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 1837-1893. The coins all shared a new obverse of the Queen known as the veiled head.

The edge inscription reads "DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI LX" (A decoration and a guard. Regnal year 60.) or "DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI LXI" (Regnal year 61).

Crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left wearing veil over back of crown, ribbon and star of the Garter, pearl necklet with pendant and pearl earring; around, VICTORIA. DEI. GRA. BRITT. REGINA. FID. DEF. IND. IMP.; in field below bust the artist's initials, T.B. (Thomas Brock).

St George on horseback advancing to right wearing a helmet and cape and holding a sword; below horse, fallen dragon with lance in its side; below exergue line at right the artist's initials B.P. (Benedetto Pistrucci); in exergue, 1897.
