Translation | (from Greek) Cretan State. |
Description | The Cretan State (Greek: Κρητική Πολιτεία, Kritiki Politia; Ottoman Turkish: كريد دولتى, Girit Devleti), was established in 1898, following the intervention by the Great Powers (Britain, France, Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Russia) on the island of Crete. In 1908 it was united with Greece. The country issued its own Drachma coins in 1900 and 1901 and banknotes from 1901 through to 1917 (the issuing bank continued note issues for some years after the state no longer existed). |
