This set was released on 12 October 2023 to introduce a new era in the coinage of the United Kingdom. It is one of a range of "historic" sets by the Royal Mint, combining newly issued coins with earlier coins of historic interest.
After the death of Queen Elizabeth, who ruled for more than 70 years, her son King Charles III ascended the throne.on 8 September 2022. Following the many precedents of new coinage types introduced for new monarchs, the Royal Mint re-designed all circulating denominations to mark his reign. The designs depict plants and wildlife, reflecting the monarch's interest in conservation and nature.
The collector sets were the first time that the designs were presented to the public. It was announced that coins with the new reverses would enter circulation later in the year.
The new coins in the sets feature a special privy mark on the obverse in the form of the Tudor Crown, celebrating the King's coronation on 6 May 2023. The old coins in the set were all issued in 1948, the year of the King's birth; they have been taken from circulation and are in grade "Fine" or better (in other words, very circulated). |
