The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
The Mint says about this coin: Struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure gold, this limited bullion coin for investors portrays one of Australia’s most celebrated natural gold nuggets.
Stuart Devlin’s portrayal of Little Hero first appeared on the 1986 Australian Nugget 1/10oz gold coin. More than three and a half decades later, The Perth Mint is delighted to reprise the design for investors seeking precious metal in trusted legal tender format. Discovered in 1890 near Marble Bar in Western Australia, the 333oz nugget sparked significant public excitement when it was exhibited at the Union Bank office in Perth. |
