The Australian two ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This two-ounce gold coin is part of the long-running Australian Kangaroo bullion coin series by the Perth Mint, and is a special edition celebrating its "definitive" design.
The mint says about it: This spectacular 2oz gold coin features a pink diamond unearthed from Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. This diamond was specifically selected to correspond with the red kangaroo design. One of nature’s finest treasures, pink diamonds are among the rarest and most valuable objects on Earth.
The Perth Mint’s red kangaroo design was introduced as part of the Australian Nugget gold coin program as the new theme for the 1989 Proof Issue. The artistry was designed by Dr Stuart Devlin AO CMG, goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Each coin is struck by the Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality and skillfully handset with a genuine Argyle Pink Diamond. The coin’s reverse portrays a bounding red kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight. The kangaroo is holding a beautiful pink diamond between its front paws.
Each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination on its obverse. |
