Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
The Superman Classic coin is part of an extensive New Zealand Mint series featuring DC Comics characters.
The Mint says about it: The Man of Steel returns on a visually stunning engraved 1oz gold coin whose design shows a detailed close-up of Superman in a powerful pose beneath his iconic “S” shield. A frosted finish to these elements contrasts beautifully against the mirror background. The gold purity and DC copyright complete the face of the coin.
As legal tender, the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II can be found on the obverse. The coin sits inside a high-quality coin case ideal for display, which is encased by a Superman collector’s box. |
