Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself.
This 5g Silver Coin Note is part of a New Zealand Mint series of small silver foils, and is a Christmas card with a Star Wars theme.
The Mint says about it:
This Star Wars Season’s Greetings 5 Gram silver coin note incorporates both color and engraving. It features an image of the Sith Lord, Darth Vader, embracing the Christmas spirit by the fireplace. Look closely and you’ll find more Star Wars characters featured humorously in the design.
The coin note sits within a unique holder, designed like a Christmas card, allowing for easy display amongst other Christmas ornaments. Inside the holder is an illustration of Darth Vader accompanied by the words "Humbug!" and "Merry Sithmas". |

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II NIUE ONE DOLLAR 2018.
Below right, the metal content: 5gm .999 Fine Silver (five grams of 99.9% silver).
The background is patterned with the logo of the New Zealand Mint: NEW ZEALAND MINT on two lines, above which the stars of the Southern Cross constellation. |

The reverse is in full colour and shows Star Wars character Darth Vader relaxing in front of a piano; in the background, a fireplace with Christmas stocking hanging from the mantelpiece (inscribed Han, Luke and Leia) and a Christmas tree.
