Coin | Silver Ounce 2023 King Charles III Coronation Ceremony |

Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
The King Charles III 2023 $1 Coronation 1oz Silver Proof Coin is a celebration of a historic event involving rites that date back more than a millennium - King Charles III’s Coronation, the first such event for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth countries in 70 years.
2023 is not only the year of Charles III’s coronation, but also marks the 70th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, so the coin's double-sided design commemorates the Queen's coronation too. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin features the (unofficial) "Public Seal of Niue". It has what looks like a plant arrangement at centre, within a double ornamental circle, itself surrounded by a circle of sea shells. This is crowned with St Edward's Crown (a symbol of the United Kingdom, the monarch of which is ultimately the Head of State of Niue).
Around above between the two, the inscription PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE. Below that, a ribbon carries the motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI on two lines, below which two crossed katoua (Niue fighting clubs).
Around left, the metal content 1oz 999 SILVER (one troy ounce of 99.9% silver); around right, the face value ONE DOLLAR. Around below, the date of issue 2023.
The seal and the surrounding inscriptions are smaller than usual, and are located in the lower part of the obverse.
The rest of the design is dominated by a youthful representation of Queen Elizabeth II during her own coronation in the Westminster Abbey, whose architecture can be seen in the background. Around the rim of a circle surrounding her head, the inscription QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1953 CORONATION. |

Reverse | |
The reverse design celebrates the investiture, where the monarch is presented with objects representing their power and responsibilities. King Charles III has been depicted with the coronation regalia, wearing St Edward’s Crown, the Supertunica (the Robe Royal), and Coronation Ring. He holds the Sovereign’s Scepter, and the Sovereign’s Orb, a bejeweled golden ball surmounted by a gem-encrusted cross, intended as a reminder that the monarch's power is derived from God. Like the scepter, the orb was created in 1661.
The cross on the orb has been set with a green emerald.
In the background, architectural details of the interior of Westminster Abbey, where British monarchs have traditionally been crowned since 1066.
Around the rim of a circle surrounding the king's head, the inscription KING CHARLES III 2023 CORONATION. |
