Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.

The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating coins under its jurisdiction. Two troy ounces of silver is an internationally popular format, which is usually denominated as Ten Dollars.

The Mint says about this coin:
On this piece, the two massive beasts lunge forward at each other fiercely - eyes lit, fangs bared and claws showing. An image of force and power, one can almost hear the resounding roar as they clash. Minute lines that detail the muscles and fur on their bodies are contrasted with bold shadows and deep indentations on their faces. Their impressive mane is striking and rises above the reverse to a 3D effect. Attention to fine specifics such as the matted knots on the mane of the Chinese Guardian Lion compared to the African Lion’s luscious mane flowing behind him, make them distinctly differentiated from each other, and are skilfully delivered to ensure it speaks to the collector.

With the use of 2 oz of 999 pure silver combined with 11.5 oz of copper, this piece boasts an impressive size of 80mm for its weight. This is made possible through the use of a technique called Bi-Metal Plus which allows for an ultra-high relief topped with silver antiqued finishing.

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: TOKELAU 2022 ELIZABETH II 10 DOLLARS.

Below left, behind the the portrait, is a representation of the national badge of Tokelau depicting a "tuluma" - a traditional Tokelauan carved wooden “tackle box” used by local fishermen. A cross in the centre of the tuluma and the inscription below, TOKELAU MO TE ATUA ("Tokelau for God") reflect the strong influence of Christianity in Tokelau.

The background is patterned with thing wavy lines.
