The Tuvaluan Dollar is the currency of Tuvalu - a small nation in the Pacific Ocean. Tuvalu has never had banknotes of its own, and has been issuing coins since 1976; these circulate together with coins of the Australian Dollar, which is also legal tender in the country, and to which the Tuvaluan Dollar is pegged.

The Australian Perth Mint issues a large variety of non-circulating legal tender coins under the authority of Tuvalu. Some of these are in the half ounce silver format (abbreviated as 1/2 oz). Strictly speaking, they are not bullion as they are priced at a premium and are targeted at collectors who appreciate them for their artistic merit and collectable value and not just for their precious metal content.

The overall weight of the coins (including the 0.01% of other metals) is slightly over one half of a troy ounce, so that they have exactly 0.500 ASW (Absolute Silver Weight).

This coin is part of the long-running James Bond coin series by the Perth Mint, and features the movie The Man With The Golden Gun.

The Mint says about it:
The ninth of 25 1/2oz silver coins designed for fans of James Bond, this officially licensed product celebrates The Man With The Golden Gun, the 1974 blockbuster based on Ian Fleming’s novel of the same name.

Created by former intelligence officer and author Ian Fleming in 1953, James Bond is a fearless, charismatic and deadly British Secret Service agent with a "licence to kill". Also known by the code name 007, he has been portrayed by six actors - Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig - in 25 thrilling movies released by EON Productions since 1962.

In The Man With The Golden Gun, Bond hunts for a "solex agitator", technology stolen by assassin Francisco Scaramanga to weaponise his solar energy plant. Played by Roger Moore, 007 must employ all his trickery to duel with the criminal and his signature golden gun in the unnerving surroundings of a fun-house.

Obverse
Tuvalu / Silver Half Ounce 2021 James Bond - Man With The Golden Gun - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1/2 oz 9999 Ag 2021 TUVALU 50 CENTS.

The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1/2 oz 9999 Ag" means "half troy ounce of 99.99% silver" ("Ag" is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver).
