Detailed information about Coin: Five Pounds Gold 1996 from United Kingdom

Coin: Five Pounds Gold 1996
Description

Gold five pound coins are also known as "quintuple sovereigns", being of exactly the same design as the traditional British sovereign coin, but having five times their mass and gold content. In keeping with tradition, their denomination and value is not stated on the coin - that is, they are identical to the double sovereign, the sovereign and the fractional sovereign in all but size.

They are bullion coins (not intended for general circulation). From the 1984 issue, the Royal Mint started to place a letter "U" to the left of the date to denote Uncirculated versions of the five pound gold coins, as opposed to the proof versions. 2001 was the last date of the "Brilliant Uncirculated" gold five pounds to bear the "U" mark; after this date, the practice was discontinued.

It has to be noted that these coins are, in fact, of a grade somewhat higher than simply "Brilliant Uncirculated".
