The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom, which makes the country's circulating coinage, is also very active in the bullion coinage space and issues many bullion coins which are legal tender.

The story of Una and the Lion has been a source of inspiration for many centuries and its unique qualities have inspired a new bullion bar range from The Royal Mint. The intriguing tale, laden with symbolic meaning, has been chosen many times as a compelling subject for artistic interpretation. Una and the Lion notably appeared as a beautiful coin design created by famed engraver William Wyon in 1839.
This bullion bar design is inspired by the poem The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser. The epic poem follows the adventures of several knights to illustrate different virtues. Along the way, Spenser introduces Una, the daughter of a king and queen imprisoned by a dragon. On her quest to free her parents she comes across a lion. Una’s beauty and innocence becalm the beast, so instead of devouring the princess, the lion becomes her champion. |

The obverse shows at its centre the figures of Una and the lion; she points into the distance with her right hand, and holds a large staff in her left hand.
In the exergue, the inscription DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS, which is Latin and means "May the Lord direct my steps" - this is also inscribed on the original gold five pound design of 1839.
The background is textured with a swirling pattern. |

On three lines on the right, the precious metal content: 1 oz 999.9 FINE GOLD (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold).
