The American Platinum Eagle is the official platinum bullion coin of the United States. The coins were initially released by the United States Mint in several sizes and denominations - including the quarter ounce, but in late 2008 the fractional denominations were discontinued leaving only the one ounce. The Platinum Eagle is authorised by the United States Congress, and is backed by the United States Mint for weight, content, and purity. The Platinum Quarter Ounce is denominated with a face value of $25, but the intrinsic value of the metal is significantly higher. After the first year of issue, there were two versions of the coin issued annually: bullion with the "definitive" soaring eagle reverse, and a proof with a different design every year. This design is the second in the three-year Branches of Government Series dedicated to the three branches of U.S. government, and is dedicated to the Executive Branch. The United States executive branch consists of the President, his or her advisers and various departments and agencies. This branch is responsible for enforcing the laws of the land. It has the following organisations and agencies: Executive Office of the President (known as the White House), The President's Cabinet (Federal Agencies), Independent Federal Agencies and Commissions, USAGov, The Federal Information Center (FIC), and USA Jobs.

Mintage | Issued: 21 (included in total). Rarity: R7 (Highest rarity possible, 3 or less examples known)
Details | Some time after the coins were released, an example of a proof coin was discovered where the inscription FREEDOM on the reverse is frosted like the ribbon on which it is placed, and not mirror-polished as on most coins. This was initially attributed to a mint error, and later to a change in design. The U.S. Mint later confirmed that up to 21 coins may have been minted like this, before the die was changed. Of these, only two examples are known to be available to collectors; the others have presumably not been released and are still at the Mint. |
