This launch set commemorates the Armistice of the 11th November 1918 which ended the First World War on the Western Front between the Allies and their opponent, Germany. The agreement came into force on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, symbolised by the Roman numeral XI (11) repeated three times as a privy mark on the reverse of the Krugerrand.
A sterling-silver medallion commemorates the event on the reverse with the date represented in Roman numerals, and depicts a poppy flower pattern design, on the obverse. The poppy flower was adopted as a symbol of remembrance of the First World War after the poem "In Flanders Field". |
