On the night of December 16, 1773, a group of American colonists, disguised as Mohawk Indians to conceal their identities, boarded three British ships in Boston Harbor: the Dartmouth, the Eleanor, and the Beaver. The “Sons of Liberty,” as the colonists called themselves, proceeded to throw 342 chests of tea (approximately 92,000 pounds or 46 tons) into the harbor. This act of civil disobedience was intended to protest the Tea Act and the British government’s infringement on colonial rights.

The national seal includes a fig tree flanked by two native flowers on a spade-shaped shield. The shield is supported by the Dolphin Fish and a Pelican, with a hand rising above holding sugar cane.
On the reverse is a depiction of the events of the Boston Tea Party. The primary element shows a ship moored in the harbor as colonists disguised as Mohawk natives dump crates of tea overboard. In the designs around the background field, you’ll see more images of the American Colonists dumping tea and protesting.
