Jigsaw puzzles originated in 1762 by map engraver John Spilsbury. Spilsbury placed a map on a piece of wood and carved out individual countries to help local school children with their geography studies. However, at this time, they were not called jigsaw puzzles, as that particular saw had not been created yet. That invention came in the 1880s and allowed for complex shapes to further challenge puzzle enthusiasts. While these original puzzles were made of wood, today they are largely built out of sturdy cardboard.
