The Magna Carta is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous documents. In 1215 AD, a reluctant John Lackland, who was then the king of England, agreed to what is now considered to be the first written constitution in European history and a landmark in the evolution of human rights. In order to enforce the charter throughout the entire kingdom, at least 13 original copies of the document were issued under the royal seal. To this day, only 4 of these remain; 2 copies are owned by the British Library and one copy each by Salisbury Cathedral and Lincoln Cathedral. more
