Background information Prometheus was the son of Titan Iapetus and Oceanid Clymene, who later also became his mistress. He was the brother of Atlas and Epimetheus, who married Pandora. In the war between the Olympians and the Titans, some Titans sided with the Olympians. One of them was Prometheus, which means “he who thinks ahead.” Prometheus was bound to a rock and an eagle. He foresaw that Zeus was going to win the battle and was wise enough to take his side. After the fight, Zeus rewarded the Titan by allowing him to create various life forms on the Earth. Prometheus first made animals with the permission of the supreme god. He then decided to create upright figures as well, following the example of the gods. Out of love for humanity, Prometheus stole fire from the Olympian gods and gave it to the people, despite Zeus’ prohibition. He taught people how to work metal with it and learned to appropriate their technical skills. According to some readings, Prometheus’ deceit was why the supreme god was not so fond of humanity.
