In Norse mythology, Hel is the being who presides over the underworld. For many Western civilizations, her name became the literal translation of the place over which she presided: hell. Hel is said to be the daughter of Loki, who was himself son of Odin, the father of all gods.
The Norse Gods Series from Germany’s BH Mayer Mint is a planned nine-coin series that will feature the most prominent figures from Norse mythology. This coin honoring Hel is the fourth release in the series, following (in order) Odin, Thor, and Tyr.
All 2015 2 oz Cook Islands Silver Norse God Hel Coins are available with an antique finish on the coin. Modern technology allows mints to give brand-new coins the look and feel of age, which provides warmth and depth to the design.
Each of the coins in this product listing was struck in ultra-high-relief proof. In order to achieve the finish, the mint struck each blank multiple times under immense pressure to create a raised design which gives the coin the look and feel of 3D imagery.
On the reverse side of the silver coins you’ll find the image of Hel as she stands guard at the gates of the underworld. The obverse bears the familiar right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II, which was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
