Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Death of John Ross and the Ross Family - Unc Cupro Nickel British Pobjoy Mint

The Mint says about this coin:
John Ross was born on June 24 th 1777 and was only nine years of age when he joined the Royal Navy where he saw military action during the Napoleonic Wars between 1803 and 1815. His Arctic career consisted of two naval expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and one unsuccessful attempt to find the lost explorer Sir John Franklin. John Ross is recognized as the leader of the first expedition which determined the location of the Earth’s Magnetic North Pole and was knighted in 1834 and elevated to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1851. The design on the coin shows an impression of the Earth illustrating both the North and the South Poles with the ships Victory (upon which they sailed on the expedition which led to the discovery of the Magnetic North Pole) and Erebus (which James Ross sailed upon on his Antarctic Expedition.) The wording ‘1777 – John Ross – 1856 – Arctic – 1800 - James Clark Ross – 1862 – Antarctic’ is in the surround and the value is at the base of the design. Show more James Clark Ross followed in the footsteps of his Uncle and joined the Royal Navy at the age of 11. He has been credited as being the explorer that actually determined the location of the Magnetic North Pole on the expedition led by John Ross. In September 1839 James Ross began his voyage to the Antarctic in the ships Erebus and Terror to explore and locate the Magnetic South Pole. On New Years day they crossed the Antarctic Circle and on the 9 th they discovered what is now know as the Ross Sea and named the mountains they discovered the Admiralty Range. On January 28 th 1841, the explorers came across High Island, calling its two volcanic mountains Erebus and Terror after their ships. James Ross also discovered an ice shelf which they named Victoria Barrier and which was later re-named the Ross Ice Shelf.
