Montserrat is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean which uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$) as its currency; it is the common currency of six independent states and two British Overseas Territories. The EC$ has both common and national issues. All common circulating coins are issued under the authority of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and have no issuing country specified on them. Separately, each member country can also strike coins bearing its national symbols; these coins are legal tender in all members states, and are usually commemorative or bullion not intended for general circulation. Most of the member states are also members of the (British) Commonwealth of Nations and share the same monarch with the United Kingdom, so that the effigy of the monarch is displayed on the coins and banknotes of the currency.
Montserrat has authorised some foreign mints to strike coins under its issuing authority for collector's purposes. Some of these are in popular bullion formats, such as one troy ounce (1 oz) of gold.
This coin is part of the seventh edition of the Eastern Caribbean 8 (EC8) series of premium bullion coins by the Scottsdale Mint, which has a new annual design for each country of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The 2024 design for Montserrat features a Starfish.
The mint says about it: Resting in the shallows where turquoise waves kiss soft sands lies a starfish unlike any other - its arms adorned with delicate patterns, glimmering like gems under the Caribbean sun. This radiant design captures the quiet enchantment of Montserrat’s coastal waters, where life flourishes in forms both simple and extraordinary.
The bejeweled starfish is more than a marvel of marine biology - it is a symbol of nature’s ability to blend artistry with resilience. Found among coral reefs and tidal pools, starfish are enduring creatures, often overlooked, yet essential to the balance of the underwater world. Their symmetry, texture, and dazzling hues reflect a natural elegance that thrives just beneath the surface. With every curve and facet intricately rendered, this design invites you to slow down and observe the small wonders that define Montserrat’s unique charm. Known for its volcanic peaks and verdant rainforests, Montserrat also boasts a vibrant marine ecosystem - one that speaks softly through the movement of tides, the shimmer of shells, and the glint of a starfish resting undisturbed.
This is a celebration of quiet beauty - of life at the water’s edge, where the sea offers up treasures to those willing to look closer. In Montserrat, even the smallest creature tells a story of grace, endurance, and awe. |
