Gold Rush 2017 $1 The Rush to the Goldfields Gold-plated Proof Coin | Downies Collectables
Downies says about this coin:
In May 1851, prospector Edward Hargraves found a gold deposit near the town of Orange in New South Wales. This discovery was the beginning of the Australian Gold Rush. By July 1851, gold was discovered in Victoria near Ballarat, with the Bendigo gold fields being discovered in the November. The shallowness of gold deposits allowed easy access through panning and cradling techniques, resulting in the Victorian gold fields being some of the most prosperous in Australia. Emigrants from around the world flocked to the gold fields in search of their fortunes, with the majority coming from European countries, the United States and a large number from China. These hopeful diggers brought with them skills and professions. People who did not make their fortunes on the fields stayed and assimilated into the community and contributed to the burgeoning economy. With the influx of emigrants, the transportation of convicts was completely abolished, paving way for the beginnings of a prosperous nation. Beautifully designed, the reverse portrays a typical scene from the roads to the fields – miners flocking to the fields in droves in hope of ‘striking it rich’. The design shows two male diggers lugging their tools to the fields. One digger carries a pick, saw and pan, while the other pushes his possessions along in a heavily loaded wheelbarrow. In the distance is a tent city – a common feature of the Australian landscape during the Gold Rush era. Crafted with the upmost care, you will note how the frosting and mirror-like finish perfectly complement each other. The ‘Rush to the Goldfields’ Coin is an official legal tender release, struck to flawless Proof quality and finished in 24-carat gold. |
