Phantom? An illusion? – Sometimes we hardly believe our own eyes. Our eyes are in fact able to take in an image as quick as lightning. However, sometimes this first impression is very confusing. We then have to look twice and strain our eyes more. We have to first mentally digest what we saw on the spur of the moment. Only on the second glance do we recognise that an image consists of different layers and details. The Swiss artist Sandro del Prete (* 1931) is a master craftsman in the optical illusion drawing style which he calls „Illusorismus“. One of his riddle images is the figure of Don Quixote from the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). What do you see under the big helmet? Don Quixote on his horse Rosinante, followed by his squire Sancho Panza? Or do you see the face of the „The Knight of the sorrowful countenance”?
