Teotihuacán – CIT Coin Invest AG The Mint says about this coin:
From the time when the Aztecs found the city ruins of Teotihuacan in Mexico, which had been abandoned hundreds of years before, they believed this was the spot where the world was created and where the gods were born. About 200’000 people probably lived in Teotihuacan in its heyday. During this time, approx. 200 until 450 AD, it was therefore one of the biggest cities in the world and by far the biggest residential areas on the American continent. Many decades before the cultural and economic advancement began, the buildings, which are still preserved today, had already been erected. The Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon formed the centre of the city, therefore people settled in housing complexes, spread around about 20 km2, and allowed the city to prosper more and more. When looking at the architecture, it is amazing to observe how symmetrically the builders worked back then. This leads academics to the conclusion, that humans of that time had a considerable knowledge of mathematics and astronomy. However, from the 6th century Teotihuacan lost its glamour. Within only 100 years about 80% of the population left their homes and the city lost its significance. Because there were no signs of attack visible, researchers assume that the residents set fire to the city for ritual reasons. The true reason for the downfall of the former metropolis remains hidden behind the pyramid walls. more CIT Item ID: 25948 Country: Palau Date of issue: 2012 Denomination: 5 Dollars Material: Silver .925 Quality: Proof Mintage: 2500 pcs |
