This coin is part of the "Mountains and Flora" series of over 60 coins released between 2009 and 2016. Throughout the series, which showcases the world’s most famous mountains, the successful initial design has been treated very conservatively - a mountain range in detailed relief in the background supplemented by a coloured native plant in the right-hand foreground. Not even the series name or placement of the issuing year have changed, making coins of this series highly recognisable and the entire set a beautiful homogeneous collection.
Several mini-series such as the "7 Summits" and the "Second 7 Summits", as well as several anniversary issues present popular approaches for collectors to get started with the Mountains and Flora series.
The series concluded in 2016 with the release of Mount Cook and Jungfrau. It is the most comprehensive coin collection of the world’s highest mountains ever minted.
Weisshorn – CIT Coin Invest AG The Mint says about this coin:
The Weisshorn which is situated in the Swiss canton Valais, is one of the most beautiful mountain pyramids in the Alps and for many a fascinating mountain. Crossing the Cabane de Tracuit along the North Ridge and the descent over the East Ridge to the Weisshorn Hut is one of the biggest tours in the western Alps. This crossing can only be attempted in optimal conditions and stable weather. The first ascent of the Weisshorn across the Eastern Ridge, today’s standard route, was on August 19th 1861 by John Tyndall, Johann Joseph Brennen von Steinhaus und Ulrich Wengerüber. In the three big ridges of the Weisshorn, the rock is often of bad quality. The rock- and icefall endangered flanks are therefore, rarely climbed. Only the Younggrat is a reasonably safe alternative. It was named after the British mountaineer Geoffrey Winthrop Young who, with two guides, chose this ascent for the first time on September 7th 1900. more CIT Item ID: 26016 Country: Palau Date of issue: 2012 Denomination: 5 Dollars Material: Silver .925 Quality: Proof Mintage: 2500 pcs |
