This coin was issued in Palau. We have no further information yet but will soon expand this page. From The Twisted Mind Of H.P. Lovecraft Known as the father of macabre horror, American author Howard Phillips “H.P.” Lovecraft (1890–1937) was almost as weird and ghastly as the many tales he composed throughout his short lifetime. Both of his parents were committed to mental institutions, he rarely left his home during the day, and when he did manage to go to sleep, he suffered from night terrors. Deathly afraid of doctors, he refused to see a physician until a month before he died even though he spent his final years in almost unbearable agony suffering from the constant pain brought on by terminal cancer of the small intestines. It was this tortured life that proved to be fertile ground for Lovecraft’s sinister imagination that spawned the Cthulhu Mythos, a weird cosmic world populated by beings related to the greatest evil in the Universe who came to Earth and went dormant only waiting to rise again upon the proper alignment of the stars. A Coin Befitting A Terrifying Monster Here you can catch a horrifying glimpse Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos with this shocking coin struck by German’s world-renowned Mayer Mint. The second release in the Cthulhu Mythos series of coins, it depicts Azathoth, a terrifying monster from the “Outer Gods.” The overarching antagonist of the Cthulhu Mythos, Azathoth appeared in many of Lovecraft’s stories, most notably in “The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.” He is a colossal deity and the all-powerful ruler of the Outer Gods and creator of all of existence. The sole most powerful being in the entire mythos, Azathoth is depicted here as a slimy, multi-tentacled creature with a gaping maw laced with razor-sharp, knife-like teeth and weird scheming eyes spread across the length of the behemoth’s body. The coin’s obverse features an intricate pattern of tentacles weaving around the Palau Coat of Arms. As if this image wasn’t mind-boggling enough, it was struck using Coin Invest Trust (CIT) SmartMinting© technology to create amazing Ultra High Relief (UHR) designs. The monstrous designs literally rise from the surface of the coin! Plus, the coin was layered with a deep antique finish that adds even more menace to the already bloodcurdling design. Antique finishes like this are typically applied by hand meaning that no two coins are exactly alike. Only 750 Coins Struck For Worldwide Release Minted in three full ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, this $20 legal-tender coin was released on behalf of the Republic of Palau, a nation comprised of 340 islands in the western Pacific Ocean.
