The East India Company - 2019 Hog Money 1oz Silver Proof Coin
The Mint says about this coin:
Hog Money – The First English Coins of North America (1615/16) Originally discovered by Spanish Captain Juan de Bermúdez in 1505, the British claimed the islands of Bermuda on the 23rd July 1609 when a ship called the Sea Venture captained by Sir George Somers, carrying 150 sailors and a dog, deliberately crashed into a reef to avoid sinking in a storm. The survivors spent ten months repairing the ship before eventually setting sail for Jamestown, Virginia, Britain’s first colony in North America. Two passengers were left on the island to claim of the new territory for the British and Bermuda was officially named ‘Somers Island’. Captain Somers reached Virginia only to face a new potential disaster. Most of the new colonies population had died of starvation with just 60 or so settlers left. Fortunately Somers supplies held off certain death until, just as they were about to give up and leave, more settlers arrived. The lifesaving supplies on board Somers ships was mainly pork meat brought from Bermuda. It is thought that breeding hogs were left on the island by the Portuguese in the early 1500’s so passing ships could refuel food supplies. And so Bermuda Hogs saved the lives of Somers and his survivors and have been attributed to the saving of the first English settlers in the first North American Colony, Virginia. Bermuda’s coinage was referred to as Hogge Money because of the distinctive design featuring the hog, sailing ship and Somers Islands legend.
