The East India Company - 2019 Rix Dollar 1oz Silver Proof Coin
The Mint says about this coin:
CEYLON / SRI LANKA The Rix Dollar – Ceylon’s first milled silver coin (1821) The first silver money ever sent from England to Ceylon as current coin was that of rix-dollars of 1821. The formal transfer of Dutch rule to Britain of Ceylon – today known as Sri Lanka in 1802 – resulted from Napoleon’s invasion into the Dutch Republic in 1795. From then, Great Britain set forth to develop the island’s economy and increase trade to and from Europe. In its rich uplands coffee, tea and rubber was cultivated and by the mid 19th century Ceylon tea had become a staple commodity in Britain, bringing great wealth to a small class of white tea planters. On October 19th, 1821, a Treasury Letter ordered a coinage for the island of Ceylon to consist of a dollar weighing five pennyweights, eighteen grains and two-thirds, the type being for the obverse the king’s head with the legend GEORGIUS IIII D. G. BRITANNIAR. REX F. D., and for the reverse the figure of an elephant with an oak wreath and the words above CEYLON ONE RIX DOLLAR, and the date of the year. The obverse was engraved by Pistrucci, and the reverse by William Wyon. According to Royal Mint records £30,000 worth of a silver coins were issued for Ceylon.
