In 1854, the Secretary of the Treasury, James Guthrie, received a petition from a businessman in San Francisco to product a $50 (USD) coin in response to the lack of banknotes of larger denominations circulating in California. An effort was made that same year to introduce so-called Half Union ($50) and Union ($100) coins in the United States. The initial movement failed and a later attempt that included designs from George T. Morgan failed in 1876 as well.
The obverse of the 2024 Samoa Silver Morgan Union Dollar comes with a depiction of the Samoan coat of arms. The design features the national crest of Samoa with Christian cross set atop a shield. The shield features stylized ocean waves behind a single palm tree in the upper field. The bottom field of the crest features the Southern Cross constellation.
On the reverse of 2024 1 oz Silver Morgan Union Dollar Coins, you’ll find a depiction of Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1876 by George T. Morgan for the proposed Union coin. It depicts Lady Liberty seated in right-profile relief with a caduceus in her right arm and a branch in her left hand. In the distance, a sailing ship is in the harbor.
