Throughout his numerous iterations in comics, television, and film, the Joker’s origin story has remained deliberately ambiguous. The most widely accepted version, popularized by Alan Moore’s graphic novel “The Killing Joke” (1988), depicts him as a failed comedian who falls into a vat of chemicals during a botched robbery, transforming him physically and mentally into the Clown Prince of Crime.
