History is celebrated with the release of this stunning Uncirculated Cupro Nickel coin from Pobjoy Mint, issued on behalf of the Central Bank of Seychelles. Featuring a portrait of Pope Francis, his image is surrounded by the 14 Stations of the Cross and a design incorporating an illustration of rosary beads. This beautiful commemorative coin has been issued to celebrate the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, as the new Pope, following the resignation of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. An important part of history this collector’s coin, available in Proof Fine Silver, Proof Sterling Silver and Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, and also available in Goldclad® versions, further honours the new Pope with the wording ‘Habemus Papem’ (We have a Pope) and his unofficial title ‘Pontifex Maximus Franciscum’. On the 12th March 2013, 115 eligible Cardinals entered into the conclave to elect a successor. The successor, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, chosen after five ballots, saw his election confirmed with the appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel as is traditional. A number of firsts, Archbishop Bergoglio chose the name Pope Francis in memory of St. Francis of Assisi; he is the only Pope to have taken this name. He is also the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to be elected Pope, and the first non-European to be elected as Pope since Pope Gregory III in 731 AD.
