In 1817, The Royal Mint introduced the modern British Sovereign. The Sovereign is known to feature the reigning monarch of England on the obverse, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s portrait of St. George on horseback slaying a dragon on the reverse. This design has remained relatively constant on the reverse of the coins for more than 200 years.
