Many people know the massive amphibious operation in Normandy as D-Day. The most famous military operation that has become known as “D-day” is Operation Overlord. During World War II, Operation Overlord was the codename for the all-out landing by the Western Allies on the Normandy coast of German-occupied Western Europe. Operation Overlord began on June 6, 1944, with the largest amphibious landing in history. Overlord was the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe. In Eastern Europe, the Germans were already losing to the Soviet Union. Rome had been conquered by the Allies two days earlier.
The operation started with airborne landings and a massive amphibious assault in the early morning of June 6. After the dock, the first attempt was made to preserve and expand the Normandy bridgehead. Various operations were undertaken for this purpose, and during Operation Cobra, the Allies finally broke through the German lines. When the Germans fell into a trap at Falaise, the battle was decided in allied favor. The road to Paris was open, and the French capital was taken. The liberation of Paris is generally regarded as the end of Operation Overlord.
Overlord’s first day was referred to as D-day, often incorrectly associated with the entire operation.
