Coin description
The reverse of the coin depicts the appearance of the Grizzly bear with his powerful teeth and longer fangs in shiny silver and silver-grey hair, with the inscriptions: “2019” (the year of issue), “WESTERN GORILLA” (the name of the coin), “GORILLA GORILLA” (“Western Gorilla” in Greek and Latin).

The obverse side of the coin depicts the standard Coat of Arms of Tanzania with the inscriptions: “TANZANIA” (the issuing country) and “1500 SHILLINGS” (the face value).

Background information
The western Gorilla is the species with the largest population within the genus Gorilla. The population is estimated at 80,000 to 100,000 individuals. The primary color of the coat is mainly black. Adult males are nearly twice the weight of females and have a bony crest on the skull, longer fangs, an opposable big toe, and a ‘saddle’ of silver-gray hair. Gorillas are pretty calm animals. While young gorillas like to play and frolic with each other, the adults often take it easy. As vegetarians who eat many leaves and stems, they don’t have to walk many miles a day to find enough food. Since their diet does not contain very many calories, they do eat large amounts. ‘Food intake’ and ‘rest’ are the behaviors most often observed in gorillas. Unfortunately, in the wild western gorillas are highly endangered. They are hunted for their meat, the tropical rainforest is being cut down, and gorillas are also very susceptible to all kinds of infectious diseases such as Ebola.
