While the ATB series from the US Mint honored historic landmarks in each state, this new series from the Native American Mint honors the tribes who first occupied those historic places. The Havasupai tribe commemorated in this release occupied the Grand Canyon for roughly 800 years. Their name means people of the blue-green waters as a nod to the sacred pools found in the canyon. While this tribe once occupied approximately 1.6 million acres in this region, that number was reduced to 518 acres when the federal government pushed them out in 1882. The Grand Canyon National Park Enlargement Act returned 185,000 acres back to the Havasupai people in 1975. Today, the Havasupai Indian Reservation brings in thousands of tourists each year, which enables the survival of the tribe.
Havasu Falls is featured on the obverse of 2022 1 oz Proof Native America the Beautiful Arizona Coins. This beautiful locale is in the Havasupai tribal lands.
