In the late 18th century in the wake of the Seven Years’ War, the HMS Gaspee was a British customs schooner commanded by the overzealous Lieutenant William Duddington. Attempting to recoup lost revenue for the British and bring the colonists to heel, the Lieutenant was notorious for detaining ships and confiscating cargoes without charge, perhaps in an event to harass a widespread protest group called the Sons of Liberty. Eventually, in 1772, the Gaspee ran aground near the village of Warwick and was subsequently attacked and set afire. The Gaspee Affair was a major event in the lead-up to the American Revolution, and its 250-year anniversary is commemorated by the 2022 1 oz Proof American Revolution The Gaspee Affair Silver Coin.

Today, the spot where the HMS Gaspee ran aground is known as Gaspee Point. The attack on and burning of the ship is known as the Gaspee Affair, and although the British Crown dispatched a special commission to find the perpetrators, the attackers clearly had enough support from the people of the surrounding countryside that the commission had no luck in finding them.
The coin’s reverse side features an engraving of the destruction of the HMS Gaspee. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “The Gaspee Affair” and “1772 – 2022.”
The coin’s obverse side features a detailed engraving of the people of the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation gathered under the boughs of an oak tree with the rays of the sun radiating from beyond, and a banner carrying the band’s name clasped in the talons of the bald eagle in foreground. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “AMERICA” and “$1.”
