George Washington was an American political leader, military general, statesman, and Founding Father of the United States, who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Washington led the Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War, and presided at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, which established the Constitution of the United States and a federal government for the United States. Washington has been called the "Father of the Nation" for his manifold leadership in the formative days of the country.

To mark the bicentennial (200 years) since his birth, the United States struck a quarter dollar with his portrait on the obverse. In 1931 Laura Gardin Fraser was the winner of the competition to design the new quarter. Her winning design was ignored by the then-Treasury Secretary, Andrew Mellon, who selected a design by John Flanagan instead.

Fraser's design was coined as a commemorative five-dollar gold piece in 1999. The Commission of Fine Arts and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee selected it to appear on the obverse of the American Women quarters program (2022 - 2025).

The design shows the portrait of George Washington facing right, his long hair falling behind in a queue. The designer's initials LGF are on the neck truncation.
