Legend | CHARLES III D · G · REX [value] |
---|---|
Full text | CHARLES III DEI GRATIA REX |
Translation | Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King. |
This legend is displayed on the coinage of Canada issued during the reign of King Charles III. By a long standing tradition, British coinage uses the Latin language for the obverse legends, and in this respect Canada follows the British tradition. In a departure from tradition though, the name of the monarch is given as Charles and not in its Latinised form Carolus, as was the case of the two previous British kings named Charles. On British coins, the King is also titled "Defender of the Faith" due to his role as head of the Anglican Church; this is not the case on Canadian coinage, because of the separation of the monarchy from religion in Canada. Also, British coins do not show the name of the issuing country, while Canadian coins do - but, where the King's portrait and this legend are on the obverse, the word "Canada" is on the reverse. |
