Information about mint: Central Mint

Central Mint (1920 - present)

The Central Mint of Taiwan manufactures circulating coins and commemorative coinage, as well as medals, orders and decorations commissioned by the Presidential Office to be awarded to citizens. The Mint also makes official seals as commissioned by government agencies and schools, and is also in the business of manufacturing bullion bars and other metallic products.

The mint was originally established in 1920 as the Shanghai Mint in Shanghai, China. In 1928 it was renamed as Central Mint and made subordinate to the Ministry of Finance.
In 1937 it relocated to the rear along with the government during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Mint facilities were set up in the cities of Wuchang, Chengdu, Guilin, Lanzhou and Kunming in succession; these sites were closed up upon victory.

In 1946 the mint returned to Shanghai, but during the Chinese Civil War - together with the government - it relocated to Taiwan in 1949 and set up mint facilities in Taipei City. The Mint became subordinate to the Central Bank of Taiwan then. In 1976 it moved to its current location in Taoyuan City, Taiwan (Republic of China).
