Downies began as a one-man mail-order stamp business in 1932. Now it is a large distributor of coins and other collectables, some of which the company produces itself. Their actual manufacture is outsourced to other companies, but these are not mentioned in the certificates that come with the products.

Downies has also acquired Macquarie Mint (which was also an Australian coin trader, and not an actual mint as the name suggests), and distributes some products under this brand.

Downies does not use a mint mark on its products.
