The Malta Mint was inaugurated in December 1973 with the collaboration of the Sovereign Military Order of St John, which governed Malta until 1798. The mint initially produced special issue coins in precious metal operating from the Central Bank of Malta’s own premises. It subsequently moved to larger premises in Sa Maison where it geared up its operations to produce normal currency, culminating in the production of tens of millions of coins when a new definitive set was issued in the second half of the 1980s.
The Malta Mint was closed down in 1995. |
