Emily Damstra (1975 - )

Emily Susan Damstra is a Canadian-American scientific illustrator and coin designer renowned for her contributions to numismatic art. Educated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Science Illustration from the University of Michigan, she has built a career blending precision and storytelling, particularly in natural science subjects. Her work spans publications, museum exhibits, and over 40 coins and medals for the U.S. Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint, including the reverse of the Type II American Silver Eagle introduced in 2021 and designs for the American Women Quarters Program.

Damstra is known for her hyper-detailed depictions of wildlife and cultural themes, earning accolades like the Coin of the Year award for her 2016 Maple Canopy design and the Boys Town Centennial Commemorative Coin. A member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, she champions diversity in coin design. She has also designed some postage stamps for the United Nations Postal Administration.
