Information about Pope John II

Pope John II (470 - 8 May 535)

Pope John II (Latin: Ioannes II) was Pope of the Catholic Church from 2 January 533 to his death in 535.

He was born in Rome as Mercurius. He was the son of Projectus. He became a priest of the Basilica di San Clemente on the Caelian Hill. He became Pope on 2 January 533. The basilica of St. Clement still retains memorials of "Johannes surnamed Mercurius". A reference to Presbyter Mercurius is found on a fragment of an ancient Ciborium. Several marble slabs that enclose the schola cantorum bear upon them, in the style of the sixth century, his monogram.
