Sherl Joseph Winter was an American sculptor, engraver, and medallic artist renowned for his U.S. Mint commemorative coin designs and public sculptures. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he studied under Walker Hancock at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before earning BFA and MFA degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (1959). As a sculptor-engraver for the U.S Mint (1967 - 1983) and contributor later, Winter designed the 1986 Statue of Liberty half-dollar reverse (featuring immigrants at Ellis Island) and the 1988 Olympics silver dollar reverse. He later served on the Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee (2005 - 2009). He co-founded the Winter Art Studio in Chestnut Hill, producing over 300 medals for private mints, including Marine Corps and American Revolution bicentennial commemoratives . Winter’s medallic art blended historical narratives with accessible public engagement. He died in 2020, aged 85. |
