Introduced in 1996, the long-running Australian Lunar Coin Series features the 12 animals of the lunar zodiac. In 2024, the coins celebrate the dragon, whose rule over every fifth year in the 12-year lunar cycle is said to bestow bravery, wisdom, ambition, and success on people born under its influence.
Portraying a Chinese dragon and a flaming pearl, each coin features a different combination of surface treatments. A delicately frosted design on the proof release appears on an immaculately polished table; the coloured release depicts the dragon in vivid hues; the gilded coin highlights the dragon in 24-carat gold.
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the set is presented in a classic display case with a geometric design on its transparent lid. The case comes in an illustrated shipper featuring a dragon. When arrayed with other three-coin set shippers from the series, the resulting diorama depicts the legend of The Great Race, in which 12 animals successfully compete for a position in the lunar zodiac. |
