In 1990 the German Democratic Republic (GDR; German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) became part of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG; German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, BRD) to form the reunited country of Germany.

Germany has five mints which strike circulation coins; they are distinguished by their mint marks - A for Berlin, D for Munich, F for Stuttgart, G for Karlsruhe and J for Hamburg.
