Since 2006, Germany has issued a special 2 Euro coin from a Bundesland (province) every year, depicting an important object from that region. The theme of the 2011 German 2 Euro is the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia).
Nordrhein-Westfalen (in English: North Rhine-Westphalia), commonly shortened to NRW, is a state (Land) in Western Germany. Covering an area of 34,084 square kilometres, it is the fourth-largest German state by size. The Nordrhein-Westfalen €2 coin features the Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom, officially Hohe Domkirche Sankt Petrus, English: Cathedral Church of Saint Peter).
Germany has five mints which strike circulation coins; they are distinguished by their mint marks - A for Berlin, D for Munich, F for Stuttgart, G for Karlsruhe and J for Hamburg. The set contains five coins with the same design, each struck by a different mint and with its respective mint mark. The quality is proof, which in German is called Spiegelglanz. |
